Welcome to Year 3!

Hello and welcome to Year 3’s page from Miss Etchells (Class Teacher) and Mrs Hollingworth (TA). Year 3 is an exciting year for children as they make the transition to the juniors, but can also be quite daunting as the level of work intensifies and there are less breaks during the day. In Year 3, we aim to establish a fun yet hard-working atmosphere, in which the children can make good progress and enjoy their learning. Throughout the year we will be exploring lots of interesting topics, including: the Stone Age – Iron Age, the Anglo-Saxons and the Ancient Egyptians and we will be engaging in many exciting activities.

Communication between home and school life is essential to your child’s happiness and progress so please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns about your child.

Below is some information about the routines in Year 3:

Reading Books

It is essential that you read with your children at least 5 times per week, as this will support them with the work that we do in school, enable them to make good progress and help them to develop a lifelong love for reading. Children should bring their reading books into school everyday in their book bags. Please sign in your child’s reading record and write a short comment about their reading after you have heard them read.  Mrs Hollingworth and I aim to listen to your child read at least twice a week and will allow the children to change their books in this time. If your child does need to change their book between these times, they are free to do so if they have been reading regularly at home.

Homework

Maths and topical homework will be handed out on Friday and needs to be handed in no later than Thursday. The homework consists of a maths task, as well as written homework that links to the work that we are doing in topic. Homework should be completed to a high standard in homework books and children should take care with the presentation of their work by writing the title, using their neatest handwriting and including labelled illustrations.

Our current homework topic for the spring term relates to ancient civilisation of Egypt. Please note, if your child is unable to complete their homework for some reason, please send me a message via the Office or speak to me at the beginning of the day.

Spellings

Spellings will be handed out on Mondays and your child will be tested on the Friday of that week. Please ensure that your child practises these spellings as much as possible at home. Attached in the parent resources sidebar is a list of the statutory spellings for Years 3 and 4.

PE

In Year 3, we have PE lessons on Thursdays and Fridays. PE kits should be kept in school unless they are sent home to be washed. Please ensure that your child has the full, correct PE kit for these lessons.

Thanks for your ongoing support,
